The Ecuadorian Amazon
Some of the Amazon’s most impressive and expansive ecological reserves can be found in this part of Ecuador, including Cuyabano Reserve, 6,000 square kilometers of pristine rainforest surrounding the Rio Cuyabano. Incredibly bio-diverse, this region is popular for its lakes, swamps, and amazing diversity of animals, including butterflies, dolphins, tapirs, crocodiles, capibaras, and anacondas. There are also over 500 species of birds in this area, including the prehistoric-looking hoatzin, and 15 species of monkeys.
The forest is also the home several indigenous groups living side by side, each continuing to maintain its distinct customs and traditions. These indigenous peoples live in houses made from native materials and are sought after as jungles guides today. Responsible tourism generates revenue that allows the tribes to maintain their communities and protect the rainforest from encroachment.
